Center Elementary School Music

A Song in
My Heart

Our school district’s elementary music program fosters appreciation for the arts with a nurturing and compassionate spirit. We are committed to enhancing every student’s understanding of music as an expressive force. We continually strive to provide experiences that help our students acquire skills while working cooperatively in a group setting. Our department is proud to offer many student performance opportunities throughout the school year. Check out the Peabody Public Schools Performing Arts Calendar for event details.

The Center Elementary School Music Program features music classes that foster students’ love for music, encourage them to create, perform and respond with musical ideas, and give them a solid musical foundation to build on. Music class is a safe, developmentally inclusive environment for all students. Singing, playing instruments and moving to music, along with musical games, take place in every class. "Sound before symbol" pedagogy means that students move and create in open space to learn the language of elementary music, including resonant and accurate singing tone.

Kathryn Hollowell

Kathryn Hollowell is new to the district this year and has spent the past three years teaching general music and band to students at Our Lady of Mercy School in Rhode Island. A Massachusetts native, she has now moved back to her home state to join the Peabody Public School District. Ms. Hollowell received her bachelor degree in Music Education, along with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Japanese, from the University of Rhode Island. During her time there she studied conducting independently under the direction of Gene Pollart, and saxophone under the direction of Jon Amon and Jared Sims.

Currently, Ms. Hollowell is a member of the Warwick Symphony Orchestra where she plays clarinet and saxophone. She is also a board member of the Rhode Island Recording Ensemble, a group dedicated to creating high quality recordings of new musical works in the symphonic band genre.

Ms. Hollowell currently teaches at Center School and online for the Peabody P.R.E.P. Academy. She believes music can be an inspiring, creative outlet for all students of all levels. Ms. Hollowell is excited to bring her experiences to Peabody and to continue offering high quality music instruction to these students.
